Evan McQuire, Partner Managing Director of MF & Co. Asset Management recently gave an interview with Caroline Stephen of Talking Trading about ASX options trading in Australia. Listen to Evan discuss his view on the importance of great relationships with clients and how our clients benefit from our market experience.

You can listen to the podcast here (Evan’s part starts at 13:30), a copy of the transcript for Evan’s interview is below.

Caroline: Louise Bedford and Chris Tate have known Evan McQuire for over a decade. He is the go-to bloke when it comes to making money from options.

Evan has helped mentor over the years and he is a founding partner of MF & Co. Asset Management and along with his business partner Henry Fung, he makes trading options an easy ride.

Evan McQuire, hello and welcome back to talking trading.

Evan: Hello Caroline, thank you very much and good to be back.

Caroline: You’ve been involved in the options part of the trading game mentor program as a guest commentator for the past few years, you’ve also been very active lately. Tell us what do you do on the forum.

Evan: What I try to do is generally look at what people are coming on the forums with in terms of questions and comments. You do get some people who say that they are not really going to be looking at options this time around but may look at it later on. Then you go to the other end of the spectrum where you have people who have light bulbs going off and have a very good understanding around options and how they work.

I tend to just step in and answer any questions around options or if people have put up comments around how they see the way options trading work, I’ll come in and say yes, that’s right or no, you need to look at it this way. It’s more about guidance, a bit of support and just trying to add value around the experience I’ve got and put people in the right direction.

Caroline: Evan, the forum provides a sense of community, tell us about Carmel Stobbe, a previous trading game mentoree.

Evan: So I had Carmel reach out to me obviously through the trading game mentor program and this is about four or five years ago now. When she came to me she was very knowledgeable about trading because of the program. However, she came to me talking about FX, which is something that I don’t do a lot in.

I do mainly equities and ASX options trading in Australia and she said that she had an interest in doing options and stocks as well, so we did some stock options trades which weren’t too bad. We did one trade in Fortescue Metal which literally shot the lights out and she was so happy with the outcome. Probably the most enjoyable thing about the experience with Carmel is not just the fact we were able to generate returns, we’ve got a good relationship. It is the relationship that you build with people over time and even to this very day, Carmel is still talking to me and doing things with us.

It really has been fantastic. One of the things about the trade we did in Fortescue, was that she was so happy that she was virtually in tears. She said, now I’ve got to lodge a tax return because she doesn’t work anymore. She was so happy about it and to be able to help people and have that relationship and again, it goes beyond the financial side of things, you really do develop a good friendship and relationship with these people and that’s always very enjoyable in my mind.

Caroline: Why did Carmel make contact with you?

Evan: Well, I believe if I cast my mind back a few years ago, I believe she actually reached out to Louise and asked about somebody that would have been able to help more with the options and perhaps equities side of things and that’s where it came from. Carmel’s pretty sharp and she would have easily done her due diligence on me. I think the fact that I’ve been with Louise and Chris over the past few years helped, it’s always good if you’re working with people where there is a relationship there.

And again, she asked me again around the ASX options trading side of things and how things worked and my take and my views on how things worked in the markets and how things worked in the options market. We basically developed from there and five years later we are still doing things which is just fantastic.

Caroline: How were you able to help Carmel?

Evan: Well, I usually helped her around the selection. We would have the conversation around what looks good and what doesn’t look good and where I see things going. So, a lot of that would come down to, and obviously we both would have to agree on what kind of strategy or what kind of trade we are going to be doing, but I do give a fair bit of input as to where I see things going in the market and what’s in front of my screen.

We are not doing as much options trading at the moment but we have done in the past and that’s where I have quite a few strengths. We also look at the equity side to just where I see different stocks are going and where I see the overall market going, so that’s how it works with us.

Caroline: What drew you to options trading?

Evan: Well it comes to a lot of things, I don’t like using this but I’ll use it, options gives you options – so, you have an ability to do things in different ways, depending on your risk tolerance. There is something there for a lot of investors and traders. I really do believe that options trading should be part of everybody’s portfolio or strategy in some way shape or form.

Caroline: You’ve recently created MF & Co. Asset Management, a boutique asset investment firm acting in the best interest of clients. Evan, what services do you offer?

Evan: We have a number of services that we offer but I would say the main one is the wealth management side of things and you can split that into two or three different areas. One is individually managed accounts (IMA), that’s where we have a number of clients that deal with us with more options oriented strategies and that’s really one of our strengths.

On the options side of things, we do a lot of work around portfolio protection, looking at acquiring stocks at different prices using put options and generating income using ASX options trading in Australia. There is a number of different strategies that we deploy for a number of different clients, depending on their needs.

We also have our quant driven models and our portfolio service as well. Again, we do cater for a number of different clients across the spectrum, people who are more aggressive and into shorter term trading and people who are long term.

Caroline: If our listeners want to contact Evan, what’s the best way?

Evan: Well, you can contact us by telephone 1300 889 603 or visit us at mfam.com.au.

Caroline And like we said, Evan is Louise and Chris’ go to guy for options, Evan thank you for coming on to talking trading.

Evan: Thank you very much for having me Caroline, appreciate it.
